NAUTICAL THEATER - HARPSWELL, MAINE
SETTING SAIL ON CINEMATIC IMMERSION, 2007-2008.
The Harpswell Nautical Theater is an award-winning installation that masterfully combines the charm of maritime aesthetics with the latest in home theater technology. Designed to replicate the ambiance of a classic sailing ship, the room features mahogany details, period-appropriate door shapes, and authentic brass portholes. The project is noted for its creative solution to the acoustic challenges posed by its thematic design elements.
Design and Acoustic Considerations: Each design element of the theater has been chosen to evoke the feeling of being aboard a ship. The brass portholes are not only decorative but functional, equipped with four 20" LCD TVs to display ocean scenes or aquarium views, giving a realistic sensation of being at sea. Sound isolation is achieved by strategically using 16 rolls of 1/8" Iso-Block on all walls and ceilings, effectively preventing any external noise interference. Acoustic consistency is further enhanced by the mahogany ceiling grates and tongue-and-groove walls, which help disperse sound waves throughout the space.
Lighting and Visual Integration: Natural and artificial light is skillfully managed to ensure optimal viewing conditions. The theater features a 1 Stewart 110" motorized screen that retracts into the ceiling to preserve the room's aesthetic when not in use. Full-length velvet drapes, powered by a 1 Lutron Vimco motorized system, cover the entryway and windows, ensuring complete light control. The visual experience is driven by a 1 Projection Design Action 3 projector and a 1 Crystalio processor, delivering crisp and vivid imagery.
Lutron Automation and Control: The theater is equipped with advanced Lutron automation for both lighting and drapes, ensuring ease of use and a seamless experience. Control of these elements is integrated into the 1 RTI T3 universal remote, allowing for effortless adjustments from any part of the room.
